Blog Assignment #19:Tony Curtis

Today, Thursday, September 30, 2010, beloved actor Tony Curtis, father of Jamie Lee Curtis, passed away.


Tony was born on June 3, 1925, in New York City, being the oldest son. Tony's original name was Bernie Schwartz His father was a tailor and his mother raised their three boys. But the family was unexpectedly hit hard. One of Curtis' brothers was killed at the age of 9 when he was hit by a truck, and the other, who was 15 years  old, suffered from schizophrenia and was in and out of institutions throughout his life. 


At 17, he enlisted in the Navy, serving in the Pacific during WW2. After leaving the service, he attended acting classes at the Dramatic Workshop of the New School for Social Research in Manhattan. He ended up back in New York doing "Golden Boy" at the Cherry Lane Theater. It was there that he was spotted by a Hollywood talent scout and, by age 23, was under contract with Universal for $75 a week. 


"I got into movies so easy it was scary," he said. He changed his first name to Anthony and his last to Curtis. But before long, he was known simply as Tony Curtis. One of the first things Curtis did when he arrived in Hollywood was  learn to drive and then buy a convertible. He reveled in his "pretty-boy" image, regularly being mobbed by teenage fans. 


Throughout Curtis' life, women loved him, and vice versa. He was reportedly married six times, most famously to actress Janet Leigh in 1951. The Curtises were married 11 years. In 1984, after family and friends intervened to talk about his drug problem, he admitted himself to the Betty Ford Center in California.


Writing in his autobiography, Curtis said he was able to handle the adulation of fans because, "I'd had that all my life, even before I got into movies; in school, in the neighborhoods where I lived, always a lot of furor. Everybody liked the way I looked, including myself." "I'm telling you, I'm lucky to be me," Tony said. "When I was a kid, I wanted to be Tony Curtis, and that's exactly who I am."

Blog Assignment #18: Obama

Barack Hussein Obama was born in Hawaii on August 4, 1961. Obama's parents separated two years later, and a little while after, they divorced. Barack's dad went on to Harvard to achieve his Ph.D., and then returned to Kenya in 1965. Barack's father, Barack Sr., then remarried and had another child, a little girl. In 1966, Barack was sent back to Hawaii to live with his grandparents. His mother and sister later reunited with them.


While living with his grandparents, Obama enrolled in Punahou Academy, graduating with academic honors in 1979. Being one of the only black students, Obama became aware of racism and what it meant to be African-American. He later described how he struggled to make peace with social perceptions of his mixed race with his self. "I began to notice there was nobody like me in the Sears, Roebuck Christmas catalog...and that Santa was a white man," he said. "I went to the bathroom and stood in front of the mirror with all my senses and limbs seemingly intact, looking the way I had always looked, and wondered if something was wrong with me."



After high school, Obama studied at Occidental College for two years. He then transferred to Columbia University in New York, graduating in 1983 with a degree in political science. After working in business for two years, Obama moved to Chicago . There, he worked on the South Side as a community organizer for low-income residents in the lesser communities.
Obama returned from Kenya with a sense of renewal, entering Harvard Law School in 1988. The next year, he met Michelle Robinson, an associate at Sidley & Austin law firm in Chicago. She was assigned to be Obama's adviser during a summer internship at the firm, and soon the couple began dating. In February 1990, Obama was elected the first African-American editor of the Harvard Law Review.
In February 2007, Obama made headlines when he announced his candidacy for the 2008 Democratic presidential nomination. He was locked in a tight battle with former first lady and then-U.S. Senator from New York, Hillary Clinton. On June 3, 2008, however, Obama became the presumptive nominee for the Democratic party, and Senator Clinton delivered her full support to Obama for the duration of his campaign. On November 4th, 2008, Barack Obama defeated Republican presidential nominee John McCain for the position of U.S. President by a few percentage. On January 20, 2009, Obama became the 44th president of the United States—and the first African-American to hold this office.

Blog Assignment #15: Africa/Storytelling

Video 1
I really love the way Debo does her chores right before school and doesn't complain about it. She walks a long way with her friend to collect water from a well and walks all the way back with the heavy bucket for her family to have water. Every time I see something like this is touches my heart. Most of us would never do anything like this early in the morning without complaining. We barely get up just to be awake.

I found the way they get to school a little cool. I personally walk to and from school but it's nothing special. These girls get to see cows. Plus, they have a friend to walk with. I know I am more privileged than they are, since I get brought to school everyday when I could just walk. But honestly, I would like to see how it feels to be in their shoes.

At the beginning of this video, I had to stifle a gasp. When Cheikh said he washes, and all he did was take some water out of a little pot and wash his face, it made me feel terrible. And again when he said he did the laundry and they were washing their clothes in a bucket. But I will always love the way they never complain when we always complain. We have so much to be grateful for, yet we think nothing of it.

Blog Assignment #14: Media

Glenn Beck Crosses Line, Teases Malia Obama


Two days after going on record stating that families of political figures are off limits in criticizing their political beliefs, Glenn Beck crossed the line mocking Obama’s 11-year-old daughter Malia. The mocking went on for several minutes on the Glenn Beck radio show, at one point even twisting the story that Obama talked about saying in a mocking tone, “”Daddy, why do you hate black people so much?” Clearly the line was crossed at that point, but Beck continued with a skit that mocked both President Obama and his daughter.

I vaguely know anything about Glenn Beck, but from this topic, I already find myself in the She-Woman-Glenn Beck-Hater-Club. To mock the president is one thing. To mock his 11 year old daughter is a whole different scenario that needs to be treated immediately. She is only 11 years old! Give her a break. To be calling her racy and stereotypical names that I will not repeat here, for her giving a peace sign? Really? This is too far Glenn Beck, and you need to step back and back off.



Reporters Caught on Tape Mocking Palin Speech


Several reporters were caught on an open mike mocking Sarah Palin for delivering a "roller coaster"-type speech after she addressed California State University, Stanislaus. As the former Alaska governor stepped off stage at the sold-out dinner fundraiser and the sound of applause faded away, voices identified as reporters in a viral video could be heard one after another cracking jokes about the speech. 
"Oh my God, I feel like I just got off a roller coaster, going round and round, and up and down. [  ] flying out … everywhere," one said, as someone else made whooshing sounds.
Another one chimed in, comparing the address to the work of a sloppy college student.
"When you’ve got to write a report as a college student and you just try to jam as many quotes in as possible … That’s what I got," he said. Someone else added: "She didn’t finish a statement."
Then another voice could be heard cutting through, saying: "Did she make a statement, because I didn’t catch that either."
Afterward, FOX40 News released a statement saying that the chatter was picked up on its microphone, despite "several warnings" that the station was operating a "hot" mike providing a live signal from the event's sound system. 
Way to go. Caught in the act. Smooth move Spidermans.

Blog Assignment #13-Declaration of Independence

How are the core values of American democracy incorporated into the Declaration? 
That all men are created equal, that they are equipped by their Creator with certain inherent Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.


What responsibilities does the government have to honoring these core values?What responsibilities do individual citizens have to preserve these core values? 

deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, that whenever any form of government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the right of the people to change or to terminate it, and to create new government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their safety and happiness.


How might some or all of these core values be important to the preservation of a free and independent press? 
These core values are important because we all want life, liberty, and of course the pursuit of happiness in our wonderful country America. We cannot say the same for most of our neighboring countries. So we are blessed with the Declaration of Independence. Life, we all deserve to have and enjoy. Liberty, we all deserve to be free. Pursuit of Happiness, we all want to live our lives freely in the state of being happy. Amen.


The American constitutional democracy that allow private citizens to collect, edit and further distribute information to others and how the values help drive these actions. In every stage of these oppressions we have petitioned for redress in the most humble terms: Our repeated petitions have been answered only by repeated injury. A prince, whose character is marked by every act which may define a Tyrant, is unfit to be the ruler of a free people. We will no longer live under the command of a dictator, but live under the command of God. He is our ruler. He is our king. He is our Savior.


What responsibilities do producers of information have to these core values and their fellow citizens when distributing information? Representatives of the united States of America, in General Congress, Assembled, appealing to the Supreme Judge of the world for the rectitude of our intentions, do, in the name, and by Authority of the good people of these colonies, solemnly publish and declare, that these united colonies are, and of right ought to be free and Independent States, that they are absolved from all allegiance to the British Crown, and that all political connection between them and the State of Great Britain, is and ought to be totally dissolved; and that as Free and Independent States, they have full Power to levy War, conclude Peace, contract Alliances, establish Commerce, and to do all other Acts and Things which Independent States may of right do

Blog Assignment #12-M.Antoinette

Marie Antoinette

   Marie Antoinette was born in Vienna, Austria, bound to her own beliefs to be queen. In 1770, her destiny was fulfilled when she married her prince of France, whom four years after, was crowned King. Marie decreased her staff and those of privileged positions during France's financial crisis. I found this to be reasonable, though France found otherwise. Marie and her husband Louis was subject to danger because of their personalities and by their decisions for their country.

   I would personally think that Marie is important in history because of the way she was captured and later killed by accusation. She was captured during an invasion and was treated with immense cruelty. Her best friend was decapitated and her head was stuck on a pike. They marched around with her head in front of Marie. I do not understand how inhumane people can be, it's terrible and is why I'm partial to misanthropy.  Not long after she was released from captivity, she was accused without proof. She was charged without any proof of being in cahoots with the enemy, allowing them to know their secrets. Marie then died on the guillotine, following her husband.

Blog #10

George Muller is like most people today. He was turned away from God by his own actions. He did not even comprehend the fact there was a God at all. He practiced ungodly things and conversed with sinners. It's hard to think of how someone could not be aware that there is a God in Heaven watching over us.

Later on in his life, George had knelt down and prayed for the first time. He accepted God into his heart and became saved. While with his unbelieving friends, he wanted to tell them about God. They rejected him and told them that they do not "feel like sinners". Muller got down on his knees in front of his friends and asked the Lord to confront them and show them their sins. When George came down from his room after praying for them, his friends were in tears and had accepted the Lord as their savior.

George Muller is important in history because he turned from a miscreant to a Christian. He loved the Lord so much when he completed his transformation that he wanted to share Him with everyone. He even started to preach about his life and how God has performed this miracle for him.

Publishers Ask Supreme Court to Bar Unauthorized Importation of Foreign Manufactured Copyrighted Works



     Today(September 8) in Washington, DC.,  The Association of American Publishers is pushing the U.S. Supreme Court to maintain a ruling by the Ninth Circuit which held that the “first sale doctrine” does not apply to the permitted importation into the U.S. of copyrighted works that are manufactured overseas.. AAP’s arguments were put forward in a friend-of-the-court brief filed late yesterday in Costco Wholesale Corporation v. Omega, S.A.

Publishers Express Concern over Government Mandates on Journal Articles



   The Association of American Publishers warned today that government mandates requiring free access to journal articles published by the private sector would seriously undermine scientific communication, as well as U.S. jobs, exports and copyright protection. In testimony before the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, Allan Adler, AAP’s Vice President for Legal and Government Affairs, stressed that efforts to impose mandates were based on lack of understanding of the distinction between the “research” that is funded by the Federal government and the private-sector journal articles that validate and document the process, findings and significance of that research.

Publishers Cheer Senate Passage of Libel Tourism Bill



    The Association of American Publishers and the U.S. book publishing industry cheered today’s Senate passage of bi-partisan legislation that will protect American authors and publishers from foreign libel judgments that undermine First Amendment free speech rights. “We’re very pleased with the Senate’s action,” said Judith Platt, AAP’s director of Freedom to Read. “As we told Congress, these foreign libel judgments not only deprive American authors and publishers of their right to speak, they deprive our citizenry of their right to be informed. The legislation passed today will significantly reduce that chilling effect.”

AAP Reports 11.8% Increase in Book Sales through April



    The Adult Hardcover category was up 49.2% percent in April compared to last year with sales of $142.9 million; sales through April are up by 16.2% percent. Adult Paperback sales increased 19.6 percent for the month ($128.2 million) and increased by 19.4 percent for the year. Adult Mass Market sales decreased 17.7 percent for April with sales totaling $49.1 million; sales were down by 6.3 percent through April. Hardcover Children’s/YA sales declined 11.2 percent for the month with sales of $40.5 million; sales through April are down by 30.2 percent. Children’s/YA Paperback sales decreased 0.8 percent in April with sales totaling $39.9 million; sales fell 6.1 percent through April.

Blog Assignment #6 : Smilebox

      I created a scrapbook consisting of my favorite artists creations. My brother Ben's photography. I absolutely love and cherish his works. I especially like the way he captures each moment perfectly. Thanks to his extremely large camera lenses (which I think is how they found that Pluto wasn't a planet) , his imagination, and his steady hand, he has produced this for us to enjoy.

      I made this scrapbook for him and my classmates to enjoy his works. He deserves the recognition. I want to get his photography out in the knowing for people to see. He will be one of the greatest photographers in our days. I'm going to make sure of that. :)
